About Us
Most cities sit beside the water. Fort Lauderdale put the water inside. Developer Charles G. Rodes studied Venice, Italy, and beginning in 1920 dredged 165 miles of canals through the city — creating the finger island neighborhoods of Las Olas Isles, Seven Isles, and Nurmi Isles where private docks line every lot and the Intracoastal Waterway is a neighborhood street. The result earned Fort Lauderdale the name “Venice of America” and the title of yachting capital of the world. It also means salt air does not stop at the beach. The same chloride-laden breeze that reaches Las Olas Boulevard and the mansions of Millionaire’s Row is attacking the hardware and leather of every designer bag kept anywhere in the city.
Artbag serves Fort Lauderdale from our Coral Springs workshop at 927 N. University Drive — approximately 25 minutes west via Sample Road or I-595 to University Drive. We are the closest true luxury handbag restoration specialist to Broward County’s largest city, and we have been doing this work since 1932.
In most South Florida cities, salt air damage concentrates within a mile or two of the coast. In Fort Lauderdale, the canals carry salt air and humidity deep into inland neighborhoods — Las Olas Isles, Victoria Park, Rio Vista, and beyond. Hardware on a Chanel flap stored in a canal-front home corrodes as quickly as one kept beachside. Year-round humidity peaks at 85–90% through summer, creating ideal conditions for mold inside stored bags and silent leather coating failure. Florida’s UV intensity bleaches leather faster than any temperate climate. The Broward Center for the Performing Arts hosts 700+ performances per year — every gala and opening night is another occasion when bags come out of storage and the cumulative effect of months in that environment becomes visible.

Yes, meaningfully so. Canal-front properties in Las Olas Isles, Seven Isles, and Nurmi Isles experience the same salt air concentration as oceanfront homes. The Intracoastal Waterway carries chloride-rich air directly into enclosed residential canals, where it lingers. Hardware corrosion and leather surface degradation both accelerate significantly compared to homes two miles west. We recommend annual professional inspection for any bag regularly kept on or near Fort Lauderdale’s waterways.
At the beach, salt air concentrates near the shore and diminishes inland. Fort Lauderdale’s canal system distributes that same corrosive air throughout the city — including neighborhoods miles from the Atlantic. A bag stored in a Victoria Park or Rio Vista home is exposed to similar humidity and salt levels as one kept in a beachfront condo. This citywide distribution is what makes Fort Lauderdale’s climate uniquely aggressive for luxury leather care.
